My Top 6 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Health Routine During the Holidays
An intensive health protocol or elimination diet can be especially daunting over the holidays. Life gets busy and we're surrounded by distractions and temptations, but that doesn't mean we need to give up on our health goals or sacrifice holiday cheer. Here are my top 5 tips to make it easier, and even enjoyable, to stick to your regimen this holiday season, or whenever life gets hectic.
Keep a routine.
Even if it’s a modified routine, schedule your daily “must-do’s” in your calendar and set phone reminders to keep you on track. If you’re having trouble remembering which supplements to take when, write them all down in this supplement schedule template and tape it inside your cupboard.
If you anticipate craving your favorite holiday treat or having tempting "off-limit" foods in the house, you can find satisfying alternatives ahead of time. There are amazing gluten, dairy, and egg-free desserts that taste incredible (in my humble opinion) and don't require a culinary degree to whip up. Just google what you're looking for. You can also find packaged options at any health food store.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, talk to your doctor about taking a break from less necessary supplements so you can focus on the high-priority protocols until life settles down a bit. Stressing over your supplement schedule isn’t going to help your healing process.
Make it enjoyable.
It’s easy to feel like a slave to our regimens and forget why we’re doing it all. Write down your goals and motivations and post them where you can see them throughout the day. Need some inspiration? Here are some common goals I hear from my patients:s: to stick to than a nasty-tasting concoction you have to choke down. Tell your functional medicine doctor if you prefer supplements in pill, powder, or liquid form and they can help guide you to the best option.
Give yourself some grace.
Perfection is unrealistic, especially during busier times. Okay, you “messed up” and ate something you weren’t supposed to or forgot to take a supplement or two... No good will come from beating yourself up over it. Regroup and move on. Often, these “mistakes” can be a good lesson. Now you know there’s corn flour in that cauliflower pizza crust or that you just cannot remember to take supplements during the busiest time in your workday. We can use that information to make a more sustainable and realistic plan for you.
