The Ugly Truth About Beauty Products

August 27, 2017

Our daily lives are filled with products marketed to make us beautiful, younger, more happy, etc but what they could really be doing is messing with our hormones and making us sick! Yikes!

Most beauty and self-care products are full of chemicals such as parabens and phthalates, which have harmful effects on the body. Parabens are a type of chemical coined pseudo-estrogens, meaning they resemble our natural hormones. When they are ingested or absorbed through the skin, they can block the function of real hormones.

So what can we do? Embrace our imperfections and never wear makeup again?.. That sounds nice, but may not be realistic. Luckily there are tons of clean beauty brands, and more coming, that want you to look your best without the toxins.

1. Do an overhaul

Pull out all of your products from your drawers, cupboards, medicine cabinets. You may be surprised with how much you have. I know I was! Serums, toners, lotions, oils, day creams, night creams, eye creams, sunscreens, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, shave creams, foundations, powders, concealers, blushes, bronzers, eye shadows, eyeliners, brow pencils, mascaras.. the list goes on and on.

2. Toss the toxins. Check all of your products on an app like Think Dirty or EWG's Healthy Living to see their safety rating. Not listed? You can also search individual ingredients. Learning which chemicals are big no-nos will also help keep it clean with future purchases. The Environmental Working Group also has an excellent website EWG.com with several guides and databases for food, cosmetics and sunscreens.

3. Simplify your regimen. The less products you use, the less ingredients you need to worry about. This also saves time, money, and the stress of trying to find things or decide which product to use. Even if you have troublesome skin, it's likely you don't need as many products as you think. Oils tend to be great options for multi-tasking and can be used to cleanse and moisturize the skin. You can even add different combinations of essential oils to the same carrier oil to get different benefits and scents.

4. Shop clean.

Now for the fun part. Buying new safe cosmetics! Depending on where you live, this may be largely online.

If you live in a big city, you may be lucky enough to have a boutique, spa, salon, or health food store that sells clean products. If you live in Orange County like me, Laguna Beach has a beautiful little boutique called Roots The Beauty Underground which offers a wide selection of clean products. It's my new favorite place for all my beauty needs. They also have an online store if you don't live locally.

Now go clean out that medicine cabinet and clean up your beauty routine! And above all, remember that you don't need anything external to be beautiful. Take good care of yourself and your health will shine through!

XO, Miranda
